Insiders View: Summer Bible Study

On this Insider's View we are going to hear from our Director of Ritual, Brooke Taylor. She leads our chapter by encouraging us in our faith in Christ, and by strengthening our rituals as Alpha Gams. She is leading a bible study this summer in Auburn with all of our gals that are there this summer, and we wanted to know what they had been talking about together. Here is what she said:

We meet weekly over the summer with the girls who are staying in Auburn. Our goal for this study is to talk weekly about different topics that we struggle with or want to work on and what the Bible says about them!

Our goals for this Bible Study & this community are:

1. That we learn how to love each other better because we have learned more about how Jesus loves us. “Love is patient, love is kind, love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant, is not rude, is not self-seeking, is not irritable, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

2. That this community will cultivate new Christ-centered relationships and grow existing ones. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and will all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40

3. That we will encourage one another in our walks with Christ, and with the daily struggles that we face as we live out the calling God has placed on each of our lives. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

This past week we talked about what the Bible says about loneliness and the importance of friendship!

College can be very lonely if we are not rooted in Christ daily and seeking Godly friendships that encourage us and help us back up when we stumble. We know that the most important part of friendship is realizing that other people are sinners like ourselves and will never meet every expectation we set for them, and we will never be able to do that for our friends either. That is why it is so important to seek the one who can meet all of our needs and fill our expectations first.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Then embrace friendships with those around us, among who we are fully known and fully loved, as we are called to do.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Because we know the importance of praying, asking for community, and being a good friend to others!

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

I am so thankful for each and every woman that I get to do this Bible study with. I am so excited to see what the rest of this summer will hold and hope this has encouraged you to do the same with the women in your life!

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

Thank you, Brooke, for sharing these words with us. We can't wait to be back all together in the fall!

Meet Emma!

She is a rising Sophomore from Katy, TX majoring in Marketing and minoring in Spanish and Nonprofit.

We wanted to ask Emma some details about what she's doing this summer, and about the journals she made to make it happen. Her passion is undeniable, and she makes our hearts so full!

Tell us what you are doing this summer!

"I've been called to a 2.5 month internship with Mission UpReach in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras. Throughout the summer, I'll be working closely alongside the short term missions teams that come through, as well as doing behind the scenes work with the founders of Mission UpReach. Every day I have the opportunity to share the gospel through their various ministries such as Dulce Refugio (women's shelter and counseling) and DESEO (youth outreach). Most importantly, though, I get the privilege to sing, dance, praise, love, and serve all in His name!"

So tell us all about the beautiful journals you made... they were amazing.

"To help fundraise for my internship, I decided to sell customizable journals. I first got the idea from my close friend about a year ago when she asked me to make a few for graduation presents. When thinking of ways to raise money, I figured that making the journals would be the best option because of their uniqueness and my passion for art. I started out with 15 journals, hopeful that they would all sell. Exceeding my minute expectations, I ended up selling 158 journals! My jaw still drops every time I hear that number, but it is such a direct image of how the Lord abundantly provides."

What was your favorite part about preparing for this experience and making all of the journals?

"The whole process of getting the internship, raising money, and preparing to leave has been so orchestrated by the Lord. Every step of this journey He has taught me something new and drew me closer to Him. I have become more in awe of Him in every moment throughout these past few months. One of the coolest things has been meeting people through the journal process. I have had people all over the country contact me about ordering a journal and supporting me with my internship. What makes me smile the biggest is the fact that God has shown, grown, and revealed to me so much already, and I'm not even In Honduras yet! I am prayerfully expectant for what he has planned for the next 2.5 months."

How did Alpha Gam support you through this experience?

"I could hug everyone in Alpha Gam a million times in thankfulness for their overwhelming support throughout this process. I could go on and on about the love that I have received from each and every girl in Alpha Gam. At least half of my journals were ordered from girls in AGD or their friends who had heard about my trip through them. The unending intentionality that has been shown to me through conversations and prayer has meant the absolute world to me."

Emma, we are all so thrilled for you, and we can't wait to see the way the Lord works through you in Honduras this summer. See you soon!

Meet KG!

KG is a rising senior from Atlanta majoring in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Nonprofit.

She has many amazing qualities, but today we are highlighting her super amazing photography skills.

To get to know more about her photography, we asked her a few questions:

How did you get into photography?

"Photography has always been something I’ve loved, but never thought I would be good enough at it!! I bought my first big girl camera when I was a rising sophomore in college, and have just been taking pictures ever since! I’ve taught myself everything, and have read some super nerdy books to get better.  Haha!!"

What are you doing with photography over the summer?

"I will be working at Passion City Church this summer as an intern, and I hope to get experience with some photographers that I look up to that work there. I will also be shooting a ton of concerts this summer! I will be going to LA at the end of the summer to shadow some concert photographers up there as well as interviewing for internships with magazine companies!"

How do you use photography on Auburn's campus?

"I use photography on Auburn’s campus with any organizations that need help! From Delight to Emerge, I’ve been able to help out there as well as any graduation pics one needs. Haha!"

What do you like to take pictures of the most/ what is your favorite part about photography?

"My favorite part about photography is the people I meet and the way that Jesus works through me with photography. It is truly so humbling to be able to create with my Heavenly Father and see His purpose for my life through photography. I am so blessed that He has given me this passion, and that He has allowed me to be where I am! Concert photography as well as product photography is my favorite, and I really want to start pursuing that out in LA! I will be moving there in the spring to work with some magazine companies hopefully!!"

What do you like to do other than take pictures??

"I love to explore and create, and I think that’s why I love photography so much. I love a good coffee shop, hiking/camping, and being with my people!"

How has Alpha Gam supported you in photography?

"Alpha Gam has supported me in photography by giving me opportunities as well as the best encouragement when it comes to pursuing my dreams. They see the best in me and push me always to shoot for the stars!!"

KG was so kind as to take our pictures for our website and recruitment this year, and she did an incredible job. We are so fortunate to have her, and we are so thankful that she utilized her talents for our chapter! We love you!!!! <3
